Iglu-Dorf Engelberg
Iglu-Dorf runs a handful of seasonal snow villages in the Alps, and the Engelberg site is the one most people mean when they mention the operation. It sits high on the Titlis ski area and is rebuilt from scratch every winter — vaulted snow chambers cut and packed by hand, carved reliefs on the interior walls, and an entire structure that will not exist by late spring.
Sleeping is the part that requires honesty. The interior holds close to freezing regardless of the weather outside; guests are issued expedition-grade sleeping bags and sheepskin, and the evening runs to a fondue in a heated hut and an outdoor whirlpool under the open sky before anyone goes to bed. It is memorable rather than comfortable, and the operation is straightforward about the distinction.
Access is by cable car from Engelberg, with the final stretch on foot or by snowcat depending on conditions. Engelberg itself, with its Benedictine monastery and conventional hotels, sits in the valley below for anyone who wants a warm second night.
